SoSA General Membership Meeting

Scouting America, Sustainability, Camp Manatoc

Sept Meeting SoSA.png

Scouting America is excited to host SoSA’s September meeting in our historic Camp Manatoc in Peninsula, Ohio.  The meeting will have a presentation portion and tour.  The presentation will be provided by Allen “Faze” Fazenbaker, head of the Great Trail Council’s Sustainability, Conservation, and Trails committee.  Professionally, Faze teaches in the School of Natural Science at Lake Erie College.

Faze’s presentation will focus on the recent and current efforts of local Scouts, some of which include:  developing a Leave No Trace educational program and learning trail, reestablishing native prairie grasses and forbes, holding a Field of Dreams during Manatoc’s centennial celebration, and rebuilding our tree canopy.  Their approach on many of these projects is collaborative and we hope SoSA members will see opportunities to work with together... or invite the Scouting America team into your projects!

A walking tour of the camp will be offered, and as well the Scouting America team will try to accommodate requests to visit other areas of interest.

Julie Bingham

Director of Ecological Restoration / Restoration Biologist

A valued member of the EnviroScience team since 1998, Julie Bingham has a diverse experience and background in biological assessment, project development, and restoration. Julie serves as Director of Ecological Restoration in our Restoration Services practice area, where she manages and coordinates stream and wetland restoration through a team of scientists, engineers, and biologists—both internally and partnering firms.

Julie’s background in biology, morphological assessment, restoration design, and implementation experience makes her a unique team leader. She has completed Rosgen Applied Fluvial Morphology through Level IV, and is certified by OEPA as a Level III Qualified Data Collector for fish sampling and QHEI.

Julie is intimately involved with each stage of our restoration projects, including the actual construction implementation, when her experience in heavy equipment operation and oversight makes the restoration design a reality. Her ability to apply Clean Water Act goals and biocriteria data to restoration projects allows her to analyze existing conditions and develop predictive habitat and biological performance criteria for restoration designs. Julie earned an M.S. in Biology from the University of Akron, where she performed research on predicting biological performance and recovery based on stream/habitat restoration.

SoSA Volunteer Day

Please join the Summit Of Sustainability Alliance (SoSA) for our Volunteer Day at Elizabeth Park April 29, 2023 12PM-6PM, Akron’s first public food forest! Help us plant understory plants that will provide sustainable, lasting food access to the Cascade Valley neighborhood. Those participating in SoSA’s Summit Co Org2Org plant giveaway will be picking up their plants and are expected to help plant as well. However, participation in the plant giveaway is not required to volunteer. Sign up as an individual or a group and join in the fun!

NEW DATE

SATURDAY, MAY 13th 1-4pm

Elizabeth Park is the old site for the first AMHA housing project that was replaced with mixed income housing now called Cascade Village. The original housing project was the location for many low income families after the displacement cause by the Innerbelt/Rt 59. This displacement caused many African Americans to never own their own businesses nor their own houses again. Since the displacement the original housing project, Elizabeth Park, was considered ground zero of Akron’s crack epidemic in the 1980’s-1990’s. The in the mid 2000’s they decided to create mixed income housing units in the old park and turn the site of the row housing into a city park. Since then the neighborhood has seen the installation of the City of Akron’s CFO basin and the installation of many mid to upper class restaurants put within a block or two of the site. In 2019 Elizabeth Park won the Akron Park’s Challenge and started seeing amenities brought to the park. Through the consistent work of The Big Love Network and the Living Water Association, Akron’s first public food forest was born! 7+ years of door knocking, bbqs, and neighborhood programming has gone into producing this food forest. It has paid off! After 3 years of planting edible, mostly perennial plants, the park was completely picked out as of the the summer of 2022. Neighbors take great pride in there food forest and have expressed a desire to expand it throughout the neighborhood. Although demand is high and the rewards to neighbors’ health and the local ecosystem are great, getting funding for understory plants has been spotty at best. Thanks to our partners at the Community Life Center and SoSA, we are finally able to plant the understory plants this neighborhood so rightly deserves! Join us to help plant and for food and fun on April 29 12-6pm!

Biodiversity Workshop

A flourishing "Life on Land" is the foundation for our life on this planet. We are all part of the planet's ecosystem and we have caused severe damage to it through deforestation, loss of natural habitats, and land degradation. Promoting a sustainable use of our ecosystem and preserving biodiversity is not a cause. It is the key to our own survival.

The Biodiversity Workshop is the first in a series of Life on Land activities centered around biodiversity in our community. The workshop includes presentations on native plant beds, food forestry, native tree canopy and environmental social justice.

This free workshop is followed up with a plant giveaway on April 29th at Elizabeth Park (details follow below).
